It’s been far too long since New York has heard the sounds of David Moufang, the storied German producer best known to the world as Move D who has been shaping electronic music from the underside since 1994. Although he has never attained the widespread popular adulation of some of his peers, his is a name that is spoken about in low tones and held in great regard by the cognoscenti of the form, and his influence spreads far and wide. Together with Jonas Grossmann, he started and maintained the influential Source Records from 1992 until 2005. The label remains a touchstone for early European forays into the deeper and more experimental end of dancefloor music and was responsible for unique and visionary explorations into cosmically inclined techno and house from figures like Jonah Sharp, Alex Cortex, Baby Ford, and others. Whatever this music lacked in visceral impact it made up for in emotional, engaging lushness; many of the artists on the label, Moufang most notably, went on to distinguished careers as the various branches of the music split off and diversified in the subsequent two decades. To date Move D’s discography includes celebrated, sought-after releases on many of house and techno’s most respected imprints including Warp, Workshop, Modern Love, BineMusic, Philpot, and Running Back and leaves him standing alongside few others in terms of pedigree. More recently, his Magic Mountain High collaborative project with fellow deep house explorers Juju & Jordash has drawn high praise for its raw, hardware-driven approach to sophisticated, expressive dancefloor music. halcyon is happy to have David around to play a few records after his gig for Mr. Saturday Night; we’re sure that the man’s crates have more than enough weight to keep the unparalleled Move D vibe going for a relaxed afternoon session. Come down or tune in online… there’s no party like a Move D party.
